UPSC Civil Service exam popularly known as the IAS exam is one of the most challenging examinations in the world. It requires a lot of hard work and preparation to crack the examination. The examination is conducted annually by the Union Public Service Commission for recruitment of candidates for All India and Central Services like the Indian Administrative Service, Indian Foreign Service, Indian Police Service, Indian Revenue Service, Indian Foreign Service, Indian Forest Service etc. The UPSC, in its notification 2018 has announced the date of Civil Service Prelims Exam. It will be held on the 3rd of June. Here are a few tips to crack IAS Prelims General Studies Paper.

  1. Be serious about your preparation:

As clichéd as it may seem, it is important for you to be very serious about the exam. About 10 lakh candidates register for the examination and only about half of them take the civil services prelims test. Among the 5 lakh candidates, only about 15 thousand make it to the mains examination. Make sure you are one of the serious candidates who badly want to get into the civil services in one attempt. Be sincere in your studies and most importantly consistent.  Ask yourself why you want to clear this exam and keep reminding yourself of your reason to clear the examination.

  1. Prepare a book list:

There are multiple books that can be followed to cover the UPSC prelims syllabus. Prepare a booklist that suits your need and follow the same. Instead of reading multiple books on the same subject, read one single book, multiple times. This makes it easier to understand and revise the subject.

  1. Read the newspaper regularly:

Current affairs is an important part of UPSC prelims examination. In the recent years, the number of questions asked in the prelims general studies paper, directly or indirectly related to the issues in news has increased. Therefore, Newspaper reading, an indispensable part of your preparation. Select any newspaper of your choice and read all the relevant news thoroughly on a daily basis. It is also advisable to make short notes with certain facts as it will come handy at the time of revisions.

  1. Use the internet judiciously:

There are various websites dedicated to helping the UPSC aspirants. Various topics important for the preparation are analysed and comprehensive articles are published. These websites will help you in understanding the topics in a better manner. Aspirants can follow one or two such websites regularly. Do not overwhelm yourself with many materials and websites, select a few good materials and follow them regularly. Do not excessively rely on the internet and waste your time browsing various websites. Stick to a few and give ample time for revision.

  1. Revision is the key:

Revision is the key to crack the civil service exam. The importance of revision in cracking this examination cannot be emphasised enough. Make sure, your first revision is within a week after you have studied a topic and the second revision is within a month. It is important to revise the whole syllabus at least thrice before appearing for the examination.
